Where to start

Most of us own more clothes than we wear. The pieces that get worn tend to share a few things: they fit, they go with other things in the closet, and they feel comfortable for a whole day. The guides here help you find more of those pieces, look after them, and let go of the rest without waste.

A small capsule, in numbers

A capsule wardrobe works because pieces mix. Twelve pieces that all go together give far more outfits than twenty that only work in one pairing. Here is the math for a small example capsule, built from the counts below.

5 pieces

Tops

Tees, a shirt, a blouse and a fine knit.

3 pieces

Bottoms

Trousers, jeans and a skirt that all suit the tops.

2 pieces

Layers

A cardigan and a jacket. Each outfit can also go without one.

2 pieces

Dresses

Worn alone or under either layer.

12 pieces, 51 outfits. 5 tops × 3 bottoms × 3 layer choices (2 layers or none) = 45, plus 2 dresses × 3 layer choices = 6. Shoes and accessories multiply it again.

The capsule wardrobe guide explains how to choose the pieces, and outfit formulas shows simple ways to put them together on a busy morning.

Five habits that help any wardrobe

  1. Shop your own closet first. Try on what you have and note what is missing before you buy.
  2. Pick fit over size labels. Sizes vary a lot between makers, so measure yourself and try things on.
  3. Keep a short color plan of two or three neutrals and a few colors you love.
  4. Wash less often and more gently. Many clothes wear out in the laundry, not on the body.
  5. Fix small problems early. A loose button or a dropped hem takes minutes when you catch it soon.

Common questions

Do you recommend brands or shops?

No. We describe fabrics, fits and features to look for, so the advice works wherever you shop, including secondhand. See the about page for how the guides are written.

Is this only for one body type or age?

No. The guides are written for women of any shape, size and age. Advice on shape and proportion is about choices you might like, never about rules you have to follow.

How many clothes do I need?

There is no right number. It depends on your work, your climate and how often you do laundry. A capsule is a way to think about mixing pieces, and you can make it as large or as small as suits your life.
